It can be quite challenging to find a planner or management company that you can trust with your event and once you do find someone, you want to be certain that they are the best person or team for the job.

In this two-part post we will look at 6 tell-tale signs of a bad event planner. If your event planner displays any of these traits, it’s probably a good idea to start looking for someone else to manage your event to ensure it will be a success.

Always looking for the easy way out

If there is a more efficient way of working, then it’s best to give it a try, but there is a fine line between chasing efficiency and taking shortcuts. When it comes to events it’s rarely a good idea to cut corners, because events are detail oriented. Taking shortcuts with budget, suppliers and technology can do more harm than good to your event and if your planner doesn’t know this it’s time for them to take their leave.

They make assumptions

A good planner never makes assumptions. Everything they do is based on asking questions, checking the facts and planning ahead. They cross their t’s and dot their i’s and leave very little chance. If your planner goes ahead and makes major decisions based on assumptions, you’re heading for disastrous event.

They play the blame game

Things don’t always go to plan in the event world and if something goes wrong with a supplier or vendor pointing fingers and playing the blame game is not going to help. It is essential that you work with someone who can take responsibility, because a failure on the part of a supplier could easily be the result of poor management. If you’ve heard the sentence, “It was their fault” or, It was your responsibility” one too many times, your event planner is a dud.
